Red Stars split into two groups again this week because our 4th and 5th graders spent time with neighbors at Parkside Preschool while 3rd graders made crafts with seniors at Service Stars.
4th & 5th Grade Recap
A few questions to ask your Service Star about today:
What was your favorite part of painting pumpkins at the Preschool?
How does painting pumpkins with the preschoolers fit into our month’s theme of “Creating Community”?
Does your family plan to offer non-food treats for Halloween? What kind?
Our 4th and 5th Grade Red Stars started out the day by heading over, in costume, to Parkside Preschool to paint pumpkins for the Teal Pumpkin Project with preschool students. We had fun making connections with some of the youngest members of our community! Service Stars sent flyers for the Teal Pumpkin Project home with the preschoolers to encourage more families to make their homes allergy-friendly for trick-or-treaters.
After our preschool visit, our 4th and 5th graders wrote thoughtful notes to the seniors served by Newton at Home as we continued with our ongoing Happy Mail initiative. They rounded out their day of leadership by offering a Question and Answer session with the Green Stars (K/1) about recycling to make sure we are all doing our part at Service Stars to recycle right! Lastly they headed to the garden with Andy to help prepare the garden for the winter. It was a busy filled with service!
It is always really wonderful to see our older Service Stars embrace their roles as leaders!
3rd Grade Recap
Our 3rd Grade Red Stars joined forces with our 2nd Grade Yellow Stars for a Halloween-themed afternoon of creativity, connection, and giving back!
A few questions to ask your Service Star about today:
Did you learn anything interesting about the seniors while crafting together?
Why was it important to make allergy-friendly Halloween snack bags for the preschoolers?
What did you do today to help our guests feel welcome and included?
We started by talking about the importance of connecting with older generations and how spending time together can brighten someone's day. We learned what it means to be a thoughtful visitor, practicing how to introduce ourselves, ask questions, and listen to others' stories.
Then it was time to get into costume and welcome our special guests from Cabot Park Village! Our Stars and the residents worked side by side on a festive haunted house craft, sharing conversation and creativity.
The giving didn't stop there! Our Stars also assembled allergy-friendly Halloween snack bags for preschoolers at Village Preschool in Roslindale, helping make the holiday a little more inclusive for younger children in our community.
It was a wonderful afternoon that brought generations together and reminded our Stars that creating community is all about making connections, including others, and sharing a little joy!
Our teachers also got in on the fun dressing up as the Service Stars star icons! ⭐️
Enjoy the photos and Happy Halloween!
